What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair loss, medically known as telogen effluvium, is excessive hair loss experienced by new mothers after pregnancy. It usually starts 3-4 months after giving birth and you’re likely to notice a sudden increase in hair loss, sometimes in clumps. Hair may fall out all over your head or in clumps when you brush or shower. While everyone loses hair every day, increased hormone levels during pregnancy temporarily stop hair loss. After the baby is born, hormone levels return to normal and your hair makes up for the lost shedding time.

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

The main cause of hair loss after childbirth is hormonal. During pregnancy, oestrogen levels rise, preventing the typical pattern of hair loss. Normally, small amounts of hair fall out every day, but during pregnancy, shedding decreases. Increased blood volume and circulation during this time also contribute to reduced hair loss.

After childbirth, hormone levels normalise and your hair compensates for the delayed shedding. It will fall out in larger clumps than usual, which may seem overwhelming because it’s happening all at once. Rest assured that the total amount of hair lost is unlikely to be more than you would have lost in the previous 9 months.

 Take Vitamins

After giving birth, continue to take your prenatal vitamin supplement to support hair growth. Prenatal supplements are fortified with folate, a B vitamin that promotes healthy cell growth, including skin, hair and nails. Choose prenatal formulas that are also high in biotin, a nutrient known to promote hair growth and thickness.

Use a Hair Oil

This biotin serum nourishes and strengthens your hair by activating the follicles and tackling the root cause of hair loss. Formulated with a blend of botanical extracts and biotin oil, this serum protects your hair and stimulates the growth of stronger hair follicles. Apply a few drops to wet hair and massage or comb thoroughly. Leave on overnight for best results. This serum not only promotes hair growth but also minimises breakage.

The Right Products are Key

Use thickening shampoos and light conditioners that won’t weigh your hair down. Hair is more fragile when it’s wet, so brush gently with a wide-toothed comb or wait until it’s dry. Try using a microfibre towel, as it’s less likely to damage your hair. Dry shampoo also works wonders to add volume and texture to your hair.

Hair Vitamins

Baby Blues Hair Vitamins are fortified with biotin, collagen and folic acid to support hair growth after birth. These vitamins replenish essential vitamins and minerals to prevent hair loss, promote regrowth and nourish the scalp. They are water soluble, easy on the stomach and free from gluten and soya. If you are breastfeeding or have a medical condition, consult a doctor before using these vitamins.

Be Gentle With Your Hair

Take extra care of your hair to prevent extra hair loss after pregnancy. Shampoo only when absolutely necessary, use a good conditioner and a wide-toothed comb to minimise tangles. Avoid blow-drying, curling irons and flat irons if you can, and take a break from chemical treatments such as hair colour, highlights and perms.

Do a Hair Mask

The Ouai Thick Hair Mask deeply moisturises, repairs and restores your hair strands to help promote hair growth. Formulated with almond, macadamia and olive oils, shea butter and hydrolysed keratin, this mask leaves your hair feeling smoother and stronger. Use once a week to nourish your scalp and add shine to your hair.
