What Is Dry Scalp?

Dry scalp and dandruff are often confused because they both cause flaking and itching. However, they are not the same condition. Dry scalp is caused by irritated skin that flakes off, while dandruff is caused by an excess of oil on the scalp and an overgrowth of a natural yeast (Malassezia) that lives on the skin.

The main difference between dandruff and dry scalp is the size and appearance of the scales. Dandruff produces larger, yellowish or oily-looking flakes, while dry scalp produces small, dry flakes.

Symptoms of Dry Scalp:

  • Itching
  • Flaking (small flakes)
  • Redness
  • Tight-feeling scalp

What Causes Dry Scalp?

Dry scalp is caused by a lack of moisture. This can be caused by hair care products, weather changes, excessive washing, ageing and skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
Some hair products can cause contact dermatitis, a condition that occurs when the chemicals in the products cause an allergic reaction. In addition, some products can strip your scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness.

Excessive exposure to the sun without adequate protection can burn your scalp, causing dryness and irritation. Cold, dry air can also contribute to a dry, flaky scalp. These factors can damage your skin’s natural moisture barrier, causing irritation and flaking.

Tips to Prevent Dry Scalp

Stay Well Hydrated

When your body is dehydrated, your skin, including your scalp, dries out and tends to flake. This can cause itching, irritation and even damage to your skin, increasing your susceptibility to conditions such as dandruff. Make sure you’re drinking the recommended daily amount of water, which is eight 8-ounce glasses. Keep a water bottle next to you at work all day, add fruit, lemon or cucumber to spice things up, and try herbal teas if you’re a fan of hot drinks.

Switch Up Your Shampoo Routine

If you notice a hint of dry scalp, reduce the frequency of shampooing. Excessive shampooing strips your scalp and hair of natural oils, which are already in short supply when you have a dry scalp. Also, choose your shampoo carefully. Avoid products with alcohol and sulphates and opt for those with nourishing and moisturising ingredients.

Tea Tree Special Shampoo contains coconut oil for hydration, glycolic acid for exfoliation and xylitol for anti-fungal and anti-yeast properties.

Protect Your Scalp From The Elements

The sun’s harsh rays can burn your scalp, and cold, dry air can make it feel dry and irritated. To protect your scalp from these harsh elements, wearing a cap in summer and hat in winter is highly recommended. The more you protect your scalp from the sun, heat or cold, the healthier and happier your scalp will be.

Natural Dry Scalp Treatment Remedies

Jojoba Oil

Hydrate your scalp and hair with jojoba oil. Rich in vitamins and minerals, this versatile oil is particularly beneficial for curly and textured hair. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties restore balance and moisture to the scalp without leaving a greasy residue. Massage Jojoba Oil into the scalp and leave for 10-20 minutes before shampooing for revitalised hair.

 Use an Essential Oil

Soothe and nourish your scalp with the power of essential oils. The calming properties of lavender oil, the pore-clearing action of lemon oil to minimise dandruff, the anti-inflammatory action of peppermint oil to soothe itchiness, and the scalp-stimulating and hair-growth benefits of rosemary oil can all be harnessed through the use of essential oils. Dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil such as olive or coconut oil, or mix them directly into your shampoo.

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Rebalance your scalp’s pH, eliminate bacteria that can contribute to dryness, and remove product build-up with an apple cider vinegar conditioner. Prepare a mixture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, apply to the scalp and leave for 5-10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly to achieve a balanced and healthy scalp.
