Knowing the secrets of caring for your hair type is paramount to achieving its optimal look. Type 2 hair, or wavy hair, encompasses a spectrum of wave patterns that range from subtle to bold and everything in between. Identifying your hair type doesn’t have to be a daunting task. I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to Type 2 hair care routines and products that will help you care for your hair and enhance its natural texture.
What Is Type 2 Hair?
Type 2 hair, often called wavy hair, lies between straight and curly hair. It has a range of patterns, from loose loops to large S-shaped curls. The waves are close to the scalp and increase in waviness as they move away from the ears. Type 2 hair can be smooth, medium or coarse in texture and is less prone to dryness than other curl types. This is due to the looser curls‘ ability to facilitate the movement of scalp oil along the hair shaft. Type 2 hair typically has less volume at the root.
2a Soft Waves
Type 2a hair has the loosest wave pattern of its counterparts. It presents a subtle, tousled texture with only a handful of gentle bends. Rooted in straightness, it gradually transitions into a soft S-shaped wave towards the mid-lengths and ends. Remarkably malleable, type 2a hair is often on the thinner side and can struggle with volume. To create a defined wave, type 2a hair may require more styling techniques than other hair types. Due to its fineness, it is prone to frizz and breakage.
2b Wavy
Type 2b hair is defined by its more pronounced S-shaped waves, which are most noticeable from the mid-lengths to the ends. The roots lie relatively flat against the scalp while the ends wrap around the distinctive S-shaped pattern. Straightening 2b hair is more challenging than straightening 2a hair, but less so than straightening 2c hair. As hair texture tends to vary across the scalp, sections of 2b hair may coexist with 2a and 2c waves. Type 2b hair may succumb to the weight of heavier styling products and the defined waves may not last all day.
2c Deep Waves
Type 2c hair has thicker waves that are often mistaken for small curls. The S-curves start at the root, creating volume at the roots and often leading to frizz. It is the type of wave that resembles curly hair, so if you have ever wondered whether you have wavy or curly hair, you probably have 2c hair. The defined waves resemble an S or corkscrew shape and the waves can vary in shape.
1. Clarify your hair from time to time with a scalp scrub such as Briogeo Scalp Revival.
2. As 2a hair is more prone to breakage, prioritise the use of a detangling spray before brushing and styling.
3. Fighting frizz is essential for 2a hair, so incorporate moisturising products such as leave-in conditioners and anti-frizz solutions into your routine.
4. Avoid practices that contribute to dryness, such as excessive blow-drying and the use of inappropriate products for your hair type.
5. As 2a hair tends to lack volume, opt for a lightweight mousse such as Kerotin Volumising Mousse to lift the roots and enhance the overall body of your hair.
1. Use a texturising mist to enhance the beauty of your natural waves.
2. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to minimise frizz and protect the integrity of your waves.
3. Apply a light yet firm hold hair gel to hold your style for longer and ensure the longevity of your waves. Remember, moderation is the key!
4. Because wavy hair is susceptible to product build-up, it’s important to regularly cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo. This will not only restore bounce, but also define your waves.
5. When styling, use a diffuser or the plopping method with a microfibre towel to remove excess water and shape your waves effortlessly.
1. Shampoos and co-washes (washing your hair with conditioner only) are key for type 2c hair. In between shampoos, use a sulfate-free co-wash so you don’t strip essential moisture from your strands.
2. Enhance your hair’s natural wave pattern and add moisture by applying a leave-in conditioner under a mousse.
3. Due to the potential dehydration of 2c hair, incorporate a weekly routine of utilizing a lightweight hydrating hair mask. This practice serves to nourish your strands without burdening your hair with excessive weight.
4. Try a gentle drying method for your hair by using a diffuser or the plopping technique with a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel. This strategy is effective in minimising breakage, frizz and tangles.
5. When looking for anti-frizz products, prioritise those that are lightweight, such as hair oil. These products effectively restore moisture to your hair and keep unruly strands at bay. Apply a dime-sized amount through the middle and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots for best results.
